How to Stop Procrastinating and Make Your Dreams Reality

Turning dreams into reality is often a difficult task. Why does this happen? For some it is luck – simply being in the right place at the right time. For others, it is the inability to learn from their mistakes. While for most of us the biggest impediment is procrastination.

After all, why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? Or so the saying goes. But it turns out that putting off tasks until tomorrow makes it close to impossible for most of us remain on the path to our dreams.

It doesn’t need to be this way and if you are having problems getting through your to-do list, then you might want to take some of the tips below to heart. Who knows, you might even stop procrastinating and turn your dreams into reality.

Why do we Procrastinate?

Distractions, aversion to the task, even reasons which are largely out of our control – it turns out there is a multitude of causes. As Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne Ph.D. noted, procrastination is a common human tendency. However, this does not explain why procrastination not only applies to tasks we dread but also to those we should enjoy.

Another point is that procrastination can have consequences. These can include losing opportunities for advancement or enjoyment and medical issues among others. As such, it should be Boundariesapparent that procrastination is not good for us. But we continue to do it. Why? Because it’s in our DNA, even “successful” people put off completing critical tasks from time-to-time.

The difference is that those who are goal-oriented not only recognize when they are procrastinating, they are also less likely to accept this behavior in themselves. This leads to getting more done and by extension making their dreams a reality.

For example, you could have a business idea you are working, or maybe you want to invest for retirement. Either way, stop and think for a moment and think about how procrastination is getting in the way.

Assuming you trying to make it big in real estate, then you might contact brokers in your area like, Sky Stone, who works exclusively with investors.  In the end, you want to take control, and this starts when you stop talking about what you want to do and start doing it.

How to Take Control

As mentioned, you must recognize the problem before you can do anything about it. While this is often easier said than done, you might want to consider creating a plan for the week. This should include the key tasks you want to complete every day and how much time you think it will take.

In doing so you are accomplishing two fetes. First, you are putting your plans on paper. Second, you are assigning how much time you think it will take to complete each task. This allows you to better determine whether your plan is realistic.

life's purposeGranted, you are not using a scientific process to assign times to tasks but this simple step will help you to prioritize. This is important as most experts agree that one of the causes of procrastination is the sense of being overwhelmed, thus triggering a feeling that doing nothing is the best course of action.

Another trick to help you take control is to look at your to-do list and break large tasks down into smaller deliverables. This will eliminate the “need” to postpone getting them done.

Beyond, this you might also want to take a look at what is your mental preparation as sometimes we are just not in the right mental state to accomplish our tasks. Sure, you need to be mindful of the signs you need to take a “mental health” day but if every day feels like this, then you might want to reach out for some help.

Remember taking control of your natural impulse to procrastinate will set you on a path to making your dreams reality.

Mission Accomplished

Have you ever completed an arduous task and looked back with a sense of accomplishment?

The high you can get from this can give you the momentum to keep going and this is important. After all, making your dreams a reality does not happen overnight. Instead, you should keep in mind that breaking a massive undertaking into baby steps will go a long way to reaching your goals.

If procrastination is holding you back, don’t accept the behavior in yourself, take control by creating a plan and then make sure it gets done. Doing so will make you more productive and will also reduce your anxiety level, leading to greater happiness in everything you do.
